Finally Green Energy for Ereri Primary School

FINALLY GREEN ENERGY FOR ERERI PRIMARY SCHOOL

In July, a group of 13 young volunteers from Woodpecker Educational Consulting, Beijing, China visited the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and joined us in installing a 5KW (5000W) solar power system at Ereri Primary School. The school is located in the remote northern area of the Conservancy, where households, schools and health centres struggle with poor infrastructure and services. Lack of access roads, electricity and even clean running water can make life very tough for community members.

Schools in particular struggle with the lack of electricity. Ereri School is a boarding school, and the when the sun goes down at 7 PM many of them are unable to complete their homework or study for exams. Kerosene lamps were used by many students, but this poses both a fire and health risk.

The new solar system is enough to sustainably power the dormitories in the evenings, as well as a new computer laboratory. The students at Ereri were thrilled with the new panels, and the excitement about what this would mean for their education was tangible.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy has an ongoing partnership with Woodpecker Educational Consulting dubbed Sino-Africa Education Hope Program that aims to support local schools with infrastructure. The project is now in its second year, and we hope it will continue for many more.
