Ol Pejeta Conservancy recently marked its 20th anniversary with a grand celebration attended by esteemed guests, staff, management, and board members, including His Excellency Dr. William Ruto, President of Kenya. As we commemorate two decades of remarkable achievements in conservation and community development, we reflect on our journey and look forward to an even brighter future.
A Vision Realized
Twenty years ago, Ol Pejeta Conservancy embarked on a journey fueled by a shared vision: a future where sustainable management of natural resources supports thriving biodiversity and meets the needs of local communities. This bold vision encompasses protecting the environment, enhancing sustainable livelihoods, and leaving a legacy of stewardship for future generations.
Commitment to Conservation and Innovation
Ol Pejeta Conservancy has always been at the forefront of conservation innovation. His Excellency Dr. William Ruto acknowledged this during the celebration, stating, “This conservancy is home to the largest hub of rhinos, including the only two remaining northern rhinos in the world.” He further committed the government’s support to Ol Pejeta’s conservation efforts and economic empowerment of local communities, saying, “I want to commit to Ol Pejeta that you have the support of the government in your conservation efforts as well as empowerment of local communities economically.”
High-Impact Conservation Projects
As stewards of Kenya’s unique biodiversity, Ol Pejeta Conservancy has spearheaded a series of high-impact conservation projects. These initiatives include the Black Rhino Recovery Program, Northern White Rhino assisted reproduction, and the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. “OPC’s programs are critical to safeguarding endangered species and protecting ecosystems. These initiatives not only draw visitors to Kenya but also contribute to our broader conservation goals,” noted Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife.
Strengthening National Conservation Programs
Ol Pejeta’s close collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Wildlife Research Institute has significantly strengthened national conservation programs. “Together, these partnerships have enabled crucial interventions in habitat management, wildlife monitoring, and technological advancements in conservation. As climate change continues to pose challenges, such collaborations will be essential in adapting our conservation efforts to new environmental realities,” added Miano.
Empowering Local Communities
The Livestock Farmers Vaccination Program, in partnership with the County Government of Laikipia, is one of our cornerstone initiatives. Over the last three years, we have vaccinated over 88,700 cattle, sheep, and goats, benefiting thousands of farmers. Additionally, our Training Programs have empowered over 2,000 farmers with knowledge and skills for improved livestock production and management.
Through the Poultry Incubator Program, we have produced and distributed 24,480 two-week-old chicks to 391 farmers, supporting them in diversifying their income sources. Our Livestock Marketing Program has facilitated the purchase of 113 cattle from local farmers, boosting local economies and ensuring sustainable market access.
Investing in Education
Education is a cornerstone of our mission at Ol Pejeta. Over the past seven years, we have awarded more than 1,000 scholarships, including 850 full secondary school scholarships, and provided 150 bursaries. Currently, we are supporting 311 students with full secondary school scholarships across Kenya. The African Ruggedized Education Solution (ARES) has also been a game-changer, supporting 41 learning institutions and fostering a brighter future for over 7,150 students.
Agriculture Community Development Program
Our Agriculture Community Development Program (CDP) has made significant impacts on farmers’ lives. We have supported 1,572 kitchen gardens, installed 72 water tanks, planted 121 fruit trees, created 71 farm ponds, and distributed certified seeds to 638 farmers, benefiting a total of 2,759 individuals.
A Secure Environment for Rhinos
Ol Pejeta has successfully established a secure environment for rhinos, supported by strong community cooperation. Through partnerships with neighboring communities, we have created a habitat that allows rhinos to roam safely, enhancing the management of wildlife corridors and open spaces.
Economic Contributions
Over the past two years alone, Ol Pejeta Conservancy has proudly remitted over 354 million shillings in taxes to the government of Kenya. Employing 1,000 people directly across various operations, Ol Pejeta significantly contributes to Kenya’s economy and reflects the strength and resilience of our operations.
Celebrating Milestones
As we celebrate this milestone, we remain dedicated to furthering our mission. Our accomplishments represent lives transformed, ecosystems preserved, and communities uplifted. We look to the future with hope and determination, renewing our commitment to conservation and sustainable development.
